Frequently Asked Questions

Although the terms are often used interchangeably, speech therapy and language therapy address different aspects of communication.
Speech therapy typically focuses on the physical production of speech sounds, including articulation, pronunciation, and fluency.
Language therapy focuses on how we understand, organize, and express ideas. It addresses skills such as vocabulary, sentence structure, comprehension, verbal expression, and higher-order reasoning.
At Babbling Brooke PLLC, I specialize in language therapy, including literacy intervention and executive function skill development. My services support skills such as reading comprehension, written expression, social communication, organization, planning, problem-solving, and flexible thinking.
While I am a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP), I do not provide articulation or speech sound therapy.
-
I primarily work with students from elementary school through high school. However, I also welcome and have experience working with college students and adults.
Services are individualized based on each person’s developmental level, learning profile, and goals rather than age alone.
-
I specialize in foundational language development, literacy, executive functioning, and higher-order reasoning. Depending on individual needs, therapy may target vocabulary, sentence structure, decoding and encoding, reading comprehension, written and verbal expression, social communication, inferencing, organization, problem-solving, flexible thinking, and self-advocacy.
Treatment is individualized to each client's strengths, challenges, and goals.

Online therapy may be a good fit for students who can engage with a clinician through a screen and participate with appropriate support. Sessions are interactive and individualized, incorporating shared documents, visual supports, games, books, videos, and other digital materials.
During our consultation, we will discuss your child’s attention, communication, technology needs, and level of independence to determine whether online therapy is an appropriate fit.
-
We’ll begin with a complimentary 20-minute consultation to discuss your child’s needs and review any recent testing, such as a neuropsychological or speech-language evaluation. Depending on the type, scope, and recency of that testing, your child may be able to begin therapy without a comprehensive evaluation.
At minimum, all new clients complete a language sample to help guide treatment planning. This is billed as 30 minutes at the evaluation rate. If additional assessment is needed, we’ll discuss the recommended next steps and cost before scheduling.

Individual therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. Each session is tailored to your child’s goals, interests, and learning style and includes explicit skill and strategy instruction followed by guided practice. Game and mindfulness breaks are incorporated as needed to support attention, regulation, and engagement.
Students initially learn and practice new skills using structured therapy materials. This foundational stage may last several months. Once a student understands the strategies and can use them with increasing independence, we begin applying them to relevant schoolwork to support carryover. I do not typically assign additional homework, but students may bring assignments into sessions once they have reached this stage of treatment.
My goal is for students to understand what they are working on, why the skill matters, and how to apply it beyond the therapy session.
-
I collect data during every session and monitor progress throughout therapy. Families receive regular updates about the skills and strategies addressed, areas of growth, and ways to support carryover outside of sessions.
Written progress summaries are provided and discussed with families one to two times per year, depending on the frequency and total number of sessions. Goals and treatment approaches are adjusted over time based on your child’s progress and changing needs.
-
Students generally participate in sessions independently. Developing higher-level language and executive functioning skills requires opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, and take learning risks without immediate support from a parent. Independent participation also helps students build confidence and establish a strong therapeutic relationship.
Parents are welcome to remain nearby during online sessions, but I encourage them to allow their child to participate independently. If you would like to observe a session, we can arrange a time for you to do so.
Although parents do not regularly attend sessions, I will keep you informed about what we’re working on, your child’s progress, and ways you can support their learning at home.
-
The frequency and duration of therapy depend on your child’s needs, goals, availability, and response to treatment. Most students attend therapy once or twice per week.
While every student’s timeline is different, I typically work with students for two to three years when they attend at least 80% of their scheduled weekly sessions. Progress is reviewed regularly, and recommendations are adjusted as students meet their goals and develop greater independence.

I am a private pay practice and work out of network with all insurance companies. I do offer superbills, which are detailed invoices that feature billing codes and my tax ID if you wish to seek out-of-network reimbursement. Many families submit these to their insurance and receive a % back, depending on the plan. I don’t work in-network with insurance so that I can offer flexible and individualized services.
Because coverage varies by plan, I recommend contacting your insurer directly to ask about out-of-network speech-language therapy benefits.
-
Yes. Because I am licensed in Illinois, your child must be physically located in Illinois at the time of each telepractice session. Sessions cannot take place while your child is visiting or traveling outside Illinois.
